    Nanjing denies MG Rover rumours

    door Brooklands » vr feb 17, 2006 11:38 pm

Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automobile has denied reports it may shift MG Rover car production to Coventry.
The company was responding to press reports that it was in talks to sell its MG Rover brand to businessman David James and his Kimber consortium.

It has dismissed talk that MG Rover car production would shift to Coventry and said it was unlikely to sell the brand to Mr James.

"We don't know where this story came from," a spokesman told the BBC.

    'Like a marriage'
Several UK newspapers said on Friday that David James wanted to build two-seater cars using the MG Rover brands and move manufacturing away from the former UK carmaker's site at Longbridge, west Midlands.

The Project Kimber consortium, led by David James, made an unsuccessful bid for the MG Rover group after the company collapsed last year.

It lost out to Chinese group Nanjing Automotive (NAC) who bought the company's assets for about £50m ($86m).

Earlier this month, NAC vice-president Wang Hongbiao said the company was hopeful of restarting MG production at Longbridge.

NAC's commitment to the site was "like a marriage", he said.

"We have never considered production anywhere else but Longbridge."
