The new Sylva Vectis model may look familiar to those who know the marque well.
The body is exactly as found on the acclaimed J15 sport model,
described by nearly all who have seen it as the finest looking kit car currently available.
The difference between the new car and its sister lies beneath the skin and will bring this beautiful car well within the budget capabilities of most kit car builders.
The fundamental key to this claim is the use of an MGF as a donor vehicle.
For those not familiar to the concept of kit cars a quick explanation is needed.
There are basically three types of “kit car” available.
Firstly we have kits that provide the lucky customer with a full set of brand new components with which you can build a completely new vehicle and register it as such.
The second type is a body conversion which basically provides the means to change the external appearance of a tired “donor car”.
Ever since the emergence of the kit car industry in the fifties the third and most ubiquitous type of kit car to be found in the UK is one built using a new body chassis package utilising refurbished components extracted from one or more “donor” cars.
These include legions of would be Cobra and Lotus replicas.
The original Sylva J15 came in the third category although in no way was it ever a replica.
It is in fact an all new shape crafted to evoke the style of a sixties sports racer using modern components to achieve ease of maintenance and very light weight.
Parked in an historic race paddock it is often assumed to be a classic with a value ten times its build cost.
Using a variety of dedicated new components to achieve the superior performance and ease of assembly like many of its equals it has became relatively expensive to build.
With the economy only just starting to show signs of recovery the need to trim our “toy fund” could well mean relegating the desire to build such a car to the lottery win dream list.
The MGF has been on our radar for some time as a possible donor.
Second hand prices have plummeted as time has passed to a point now where a usable car with a little tax and MOT can be had for as little as £500.
This low purchase price and the comprehensive list of donor components extracted from the lucky MGF used to build a Vectis combine to give an on the road cost of less than £7000.
In a market place where many “se7enesque” roadsters can cost in excess of £10.000 this is extraordinary good value for a full body kit car.
This is no inferior “budget” kit car; from the first days of Sylva Autokits back in 1981 we always aimed to provide a fantastic vehicle at a sensible price. The donor may be humble but the resulting vehicle exceeds all expectations both aesthetically and dynamically. This is not just about the choice of the donor but how the parts are utilised within this class leading chassis, a chassis that has the unusual benefit side intrusion framework that not only adds to the safety but increases the torsional rigidity. The spacious cockpit will accommodate easily anyone up to 6’ 2” with plenty of pedal room not always found in front engine roadsters. A great deal of effort has gone into the design of the suspension installation to give class leading ride and handling. The rear subframe complete with suspension is utilised without modification. The engine and gear box complete with all ancillaries is installed unmodified slightly lower so that if fitted with throttle bodies it will fit under the engine cover. The Rover “K” Series engine has a bit of a reputation with its head gasket issues. Much has been written about this but it is by no means every engine that fails. The benefits of this charismatic, revvy and powerful unit easily outweigh any possible problems. The gear lever and cable linkage, handbrake and cables, rear hubs, c/v’s and drive shafts are all installed without modification. At the front the suspension utilizes the MGF donor uprights with modified steering arms to correct the Ackerman angle. The front wishbones are new supplied in the kit. The rack needed is readily available taken from a Ford Escort Mk 2 but the column comes from the donor. Brake calipers and discs front and rear are from the donor. To suit the very low bonnet line a pedal box is structured within the chassis to accept a balance bar twin master cylinder set up. The pedals and balance bar are included in the kit.
Not surprisingly the hydralastic suspension system has been consigned to the skip in favour of four coil over shock units. The 6x15 wheels from the donor can be used (the 185/55 fronts to the rear and the rear fitted with 175/50/15 tyres go to the front for adequate body clearance). The fuel tank is designed to accept the donor fuel pump and the radiator with fan taken from the MG is used as are most of the donor hoses adapted to fit.
A true “one donor” kit.

i am very interested in using a spare Trophy i have, as base for such a kit..
I would like mine in Trophy Blue...
not sure yet wether i like the wheel size chosen.. i would prefer the wider and lower tyres and 16 inch wheels of the Trophy.. I just start this topic to hear what other MGF owners think...
