MG opens new Longbridge design centre
£5million design and technical centre opens its doors on Longbridge site.
At last, MG has something to shout about. It’s Chinese owners, SAIC, have invested £5million to create its global design headquarters, which opened yesterday. The investment is by far the largest in its UK operation since taking over the firm in 2005.
The new complex will employ 300 people, working on the design and technology of the firm’s new models, which began with the Ford Focus-rivalling MG6 fastback. Cars designed and engineered at the centre in Longbridge will be sold both in the UK and in China. SAIC already assembles the evergreen MG TF roadster at the site, and will build the MG6 fastback and saloon there too after production begins in China.
Of the 300 staff employed at the site, 30 are designers working on the next generation of MGs which includes a spiritual successor to the Metro, based on the Zero concept shown at this year’s Beijing Motor Show.
